04 / INSTALL

Two commands. Observe until you say otherwise.

Cockpit installs from its own GitHub marketplace, the repository itself. It is not installed from Anthropic’s Plugin Directory, and this site claims no listing there.

THE MINIMAL PATH

  1. Check the host

Cockpit is a Claude Code plugin: it needs Claude Code with plugins (mods) enabled, in a Linux or macOS terminal. It is meant for Claude Code, not claude.ai or Cowork, and an organisation’s policy can disable mods.

claude --version2.1.292 or newer for native per-invocation subagent effort; older hosts get reduced effort observability and compatibility fallbacks.
  2. Add the marketplace

    claude plugin marketplace add echelong/cobalt-cockpit
  3. Install the plugin

    claude plugin install cobalt-cockpit@cobalt-cockpit
  4. Restart Claude Code and open Mission Control

/cockpitTyped in Claude Code. /cockpit opens and closes Mission Control.
/cockpit versionShows the version, the profile, the router and how reasoning effort is resolved.

From here Cockpit observes: the HUD band appears above the prompt, the Run Ledger starts recording locally, and nothing about models, budgets or ownership is enforced. Two guards are on from the start: it asks before genuinely destructive commands and keeps AI attribution out of commits and pull requests.

AFTER THE FIRST RUN

Update an existing installation

claude plugin marketplace update cobalt-cockpit
claude plugin update cobalt-cockpit@cobalt-cockpit

Restart Claude Code and check /cockpit version. Settings, preferences and saved Run Ledgers are kept.

The marketplace in this repository is named cobalt-cockpit. A private or local setup registered under another alias should use the identity claude plugin list shows.

Optional: enforce orchestration

printf '%s\n' '{"orchestration":"true"}' | claude plugin configure cobalt-cockpit@cobalt-cockpit --values-stdin

CLI values are strings, even for Boolean options. Restart Claude Code after changing settings. Orchestration enforces the model and admission policy and task ownership; it does not block Fable unless you also opt into blockFable or cobaltStrict.

Build any other combination with the configuration builder, or read every option and its default.

Optional: the Sonnet-led profile

printf '%s\n' '{"orchestration":"true","profile":"SONNET_LED"}' | claude plugin configure cobalt-cockpit@cobalt-cockpit --values-stdin

Then choose the main effort yourself (/effort medium is recommended) and restart. To roll back:

printf '%s\n' '{"profile":"OPUS_LED"}' | claude plugin configure cobalt-cockpit@cobalt-cockpit --values-stdin

docs/sonnet-led.md explains consultation grounds, budgets and the architect’s identity.

Try it for one session, or develop

git clone https://github.com/echelong/cobalt-cockpit.git
claude --plugin-dir /path/to/cobalt-cockpit

A --plugin-dir copy stops loading when you leave out the flag next session.

Disable or remove

claude plugin disable cobalt-cockpit@cobalt-cockpit
claude plugin uninstall cobalt-cockpit@cobalt-cockpit

Disabling or uninstalling stops further writes; it is not promised to delete what was saved. Removing the saved ledgers and the telemetry files is a manual step: PRIVACY.md › Deleting your data.

When something looks wrong

/cockpit doctorRead-only: installation, host, Auto-mode, telemetry-storage and prompt-cache diagnostics.
/cockpit authAuthentication and policy diagnostics, without credential values.
claude plugin listShows the exact plugin identity and whether it is enabled.

A task stays at 0% until the model reports a plan with the progress tool; Cockpit never invents milestones. See the limits of verification.
